Ballots for Away to Forest and PSV

PSV V Arsenal, 27th October

With 21 requests in before the deadline, the ballot for this match was carried out early, on 12th September, to allow members to decide if they wished to risk booking travel.

It was conducted via Zoom with all 21 request names in the hat, plus 4 more in reserve: 2 who had missed the deadline and  another 2 who had booked up travel etc but failed to confirm their request.

The 21 requests were arranged into 8 groups of pairs, a four and a single.

All random numbers were drawn out by Billy Mitchell in Dundee and matched and recorded against the randomised number against names by Liam Finn in Edinburgh. The draw was witnessed by Natan Moloney in Dumfriesshire and the Zoom session was hosted and recorded by Martin O’Donnell in the Borders. The recording sadly didn’t work.

We expect to hear news from Arsenal within the next week. We hope to get tickets for everyone. They will  be handed out in person in Eindhoven.

Arsenal v Nottingham Forest, 30th October

This ballot was carried out on 1st October via Zoom with all 15 request names in the hat. The requests were arranged into 5 groups of 3.

Random numbers were drawn out by Angie Kidd in Midlothian, matched and recorded with pre-randomised numbers against names by Nathan Moloney in Dumfriesshire. The draw was witnessed by Peter Burnhill in Edinburgh and the Zoom was hosted and recorded by Martin O’Donnell in the Borders.

The drawn order will be published after we confirm how many tickets we have sourced. At the moment we have 6 tickets confirmed. Hopefully will get them all.

Ballots for Tickets: Away vs Leeds, 16th October

Away vs Leeds, 16th October

Tickets Available

We have secured 27 tickets as was expected.

Due to postal strikes ALL tickets are to be handed out in person at Leeds.

This means that not all 94 members requesting tickets have been successful in the Ballot.

The first 27 members in the Ballot are being given first refusal. If anyone drops out then Chris will move down the drawn order.

The Ballot was of 9 groups of 3 (27).

We do not expect any more tickets. We will not be contacting everyone who was drawn after group 9.

Ballot Outcome

Conduct of Ballot

The Ballot was carried out via Zoom on 26th September, with all 94 request names in the hat. The draw was witnessed by Angie Kidd in Midlothian; the Zoom was hosted and recorded by Martin O’Donnell in the Borders.

The requests were arranged into 30 groups of 3 and one group of 4. In total there were 31 groups.  We received final confirmation that we had 27 tickets available for our members on 6th October.

Club Membership & Match Tickets: An Update

There has been a recent surge in applications to join Arsenal Scotland Supporters Club. Pleased though we are to welcome those who follow The Arsenal, the Club Management has had to respond with two actions:

  1. As from 3pm on Sunday 7th August, the issue of new Arsenal Scotland Supporters Club membership will be closed until further notice.Any new membership requests received after that time shall be placed on a waiting list. Those already made, or by that deadline, will be processed in due course.
[No money should be sent with membership requests; that happens only after new members are accepted and confirmed.

This is to safeguard the limited availability of match tickets for current paid up members to that date

Note This restriction does not apply to applications to become Social Members, as these may not request match tickets through the Club.

Note  Existing Members have until Midnight Sunday 14th August to pay their fees.

  1. Ballots will become necessary for tickets for some matches – although probably not all. The Ticket Team now have six other Committee Members to assist with an independent ballot, conducted by Zoom for others to observe. The first ballot will be for the Man United v Arsenal Away match.

Arsenal Scotland Choose New Club Chair

Arsenal Scotland Supporters Club convened its Annual General Meeting on June 12th.

One important item on the agenda was the formal adoption of Chris Alexander as our next Club Chair.

Many members of Arsenal Scotland will already know much about Chris for his long-time work as the Ticket Officer for Arsenal’s Away matches. Some might even recall his playing days

Chris was the outright choice in the online Ballot of the membership which was closed on June 4th. Of the four candidates standing in an election, he received 54% of the vote on the first round. This was twice as many votes as the next candidate, providing Chris with a strong vote of confidence from the membership.

More details from the Club AGM will follow later.

The full report of the election is with members of the Management Committee. Contact your Regional Rep if you wish to know more. A total of 115 valid votes were cast in the online Ballot on behalf of the membership between 23rd May and Saturday 4th June 2022. This participation by the membership is a much greater than the number ever attending an AGM at which voting has generally taken place.

It was further agreed by the Management Committee that there was a need for a Vice Chair. Linda Collie, having polled second place in the election, was invited to this non- executive post. Happily Linda has agreed to be Arsenal Scotland’s Vice Chair.

A Win Win Win

Win With Arsenal Scotland

Always good to be at the last match of the season which has an atmosphere which is very special. And that’s especially good when your team knocks 5 goals past the opposition. It’s doubly so when you know you’ve won your match tickets in a good cause lottery run by your supporters club!

A win for the two of us!

Olivia and Ian George at The Emirates

This second trip to watch The Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium for myself (Olivia) was made memorable by the beautiful weather, magnificent play and (might I add) a great vegan burger 😉

[Dad and I were also amused to be obliged to step up to become acting stewards and assist the confused to their seats; sad to report, the (supposedly real) steward was gazing nonchalantly into space, looking less than thrilled to be there.]

A win for The Arsenal!

With a comfortable 5-1 win in the bag, it was great to see the players and their family doing a walk of the pitch, obviously fulsome in thanking the fans.

Sometimes it is easy to forget that our players are not alone but have the valuable support of their families and friends. Just like us really, but they also play for the best club in the world!

And a win for Lukas!

We want to say the biggest thanks to Jamie Lynch for organising the fundraising for Lukas Thomson  – and, of course, to “Jurgen” for pulling out Dad’s winning ticket!

So glad that all the the donations from that raffle helped enable Lukas’ trip to Napa for 3 weeks of treatment.  He has looked so extra happy in the pictures that are posted on the Arsenal Scotland Facebook page!

And, so far almost 80% of the total needed has been raised – for more, see justgiving.

The amazing things that Arsenal Scotland does, like this initiative, just show you how great it is to be part of such an amazing supporters club!

Kim Little – One of Arsenal’s Finest!

Kim Little, Arsenal Legend

Kim Little’s football career

… as seen by her father, Calvin Little

Sport was a significant aspect of the Little family life in Aberdeen.  Football in the back garden or at the local playing field with Kim and her brother Euan, was the most popular.

How her career started

I recall one evening, playing with Kim, then about 9 years old, and Euan at the local park.  Mintlaw Boys Club happened to be training at the same time. Kim was so intent on watching the boys training that I eventually approached the coach and asked if she and Euan could join in and that was the start of her football career.

She played regularly for the Boys Club and started to get notice, then a local mum started a girls team called Mintlaw Miracles. They played in the local gala tournaments, often winning them. From there she went onto play for an under 17’s girls team based at Cruden Bay, later to become Buchan Girls/Women. At the same time, Mintlaw Academy started girls football. The Academy team won the North of Scotland and the Scottish Cups a number of times.

Choose Football (rather than cross country racing)

Prior to Kim starting to play organised football she used to take part in Primary School cross country racing, which she was good at. This was always on a Saturday morning and when the opportunity to play team football arose it was also on a Saturday morning, I was keen that she kept the cross country going. However, Kim had other ideas and that was an end to her cross country running.

Aged 15, Kim left Buchan Girls/Women to join Hibs Girls, in Edinburgh. A year later she played for Hibs Women who were based in Dalkeith. Twice a week, we commuted that long journey from Aberdeen so that Kim could train and play games.

Arsenal Beckons

After a successful season with Hibs Women Kim and I were invited by Vic Ackers, the then Arsenal Ladies manager, to visit London Colney and see the Arsenal set up. We were shown round the training ground and then to a game at the Emirate’s Stadium watching the game from the dug out with the other players. I came home with a Van Persie signed Arsenal top.

Shortly after Kim started with Arsenal Ladies Academy (now Arsenal Women), aged 16. Later combining her University study with football, Kim completed a Sports Science Degree at Hertfordshire University. Last year, the University awarded her a Honorary Doctorate Degree in recognition of her footballing achievements.

[Kim made 108 appearances, scoring 89 goals]

America Beckons

I think it was after four or five years playing with Arsenal Women that Laura Harvey, who had been her coach at Arsenal Ladies, persuaded her to join her at Seattle Reign on the North West Coast of the USA. Kim had three successful years with Seattle Reign, winning back-to-back Championships.

Advance Australia Fair

Jess Fishlock, a team mate at the Reign, then persuaded Kim to join Melbourne City in Australia where she had a successful season. If I recall, Kim was the top scorer in the league. The team was coached by Joe Montemurro who was later to join Arsenal Women as coach.

Arsenal Once More

After 3 seasons with the Reign, Kim returned to the UK to re-join Arsenal Women as the Team Captain. By this time media interest and TV coverage of the Women’s game had increased.  Other teams such as Chelsea and Man City had invested more in the women’s game making the women’s league much more competitive.

Wearing Her County’s Shirt

I’ve not said much about her involvement in the Scottish National Team.

Scotland's Kim Little

Kim started playing for Scotlandfrom the age of 16, ending with her retirement last year, aged 31 [having played in 140 games] . It’s fair to say that her involvement with the National Team has had it’s ups and downs.

 Reflections

Never in her early days did she or I think that playing football would become a career. It was just something you did for fun, to meet with other people and make friends. Nor did we think it would take us all over the world visiting places we would have otherwise never have seen. Most of our holidays revolved around where Kim was playing football.

Kim & family

What next for Kim I don’t know. I imagine more football with Arsenal for another year or two. She is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Business Management which I think helps give a good balance between football, which can be a bit of a bubble, and wider life experience.
