Sportsmans Dinner March 2009

On 27th March Arsenal Scotland hosted a black-tie Sportsman’s Dinner in Edinburgh to raise funds for The Willow Foundation. The event attended by 140 guests took place at the prestigious Barcelo Edinburgh Carlton Hotel and the guest speakers were Arsenal and Scotland Legends Frank McLintock and Bob Wilson.

Arsenal Supporters Liaison Officer – Jill Smith travelled to Edinburgh as a special guest of Arsenal Scotland. This was the first time Jill had visited since helping to form the club in 2004 and we were delighted to show our gratitude.

In spite of the credit crunch we managed to sell tables to many top businesses in Scotland including WGM Engineering, John Heaney Electrical, FMS Fire & Security, Bank of Scotland Corporate, Biggart Baillie LLP, Bruce Stevenson Ltd, Dunedin Independent Ltd, Barcelo Hotels and Avenell HR as well as five tables taken by the Supporters Club.

Following dinner, Arsenal Scotland’s President Bob Wilson presented Frank McLintock with a life membership on behalf of the supporters club.

There then followed a raffle, auction and a grand prize draw for £1,400 worth of Sony television with sound surround package donated by Central Industrial Services of Stirling. The auction comprised many high quality items such as two signed Arsenal shirts courtesy of Vic Akers, and Arsenal shirts signed by Frank McLintock, Bob Wilson, Charlie Nicholas and Theo Walcott. Several framed Arsenal prints were auctioned as well as an Impact Art print by Thierry Henry. Other auction items were donated by Daniel Fiszman, Belhaven Brewery and Barcelo Hotels.

Club Treasurer Raymond Paterson presented Bob Wilson with a cheque for £1,300 raised by Arsenal Scotland members during 2008.

The total raised from the Dinner was a little over £8000. The event was organised by Dave Harrold, Christopher Kenmore, Martin O’Donnell and Andy Smith.

Frank said “Everyone was extremely kind and helpful; I’ve never seen so many kilts in one day!” Bob said “I am very proud to be President of the Arsenal Scotland Supporters Club and appreciate all of the support to Arsenal FC and The Willow Foundation”.
